I’ve always loved the creamy texture and vivid color of oil pastels, though they’re often hidden behind glass for protection. In person, the colors glow with a richness that few mediums can match.

On one visit to Paris, I stepped off a tour bus to take a quick photo, and when I turned around, the buses were gone. I was suddenly alone in the middle of the city with my camera, my bag, and just enough French to get by. I walked to the Louvre, asking  where I asked everyone “Parlez-vous anglais?”

A Canadian traveler on his way to Madagascar  and told me that the paintings I wanted to see were actually at the Musée d’Orsay. It turned out to be a great detour. This scene is from when I was sitting outdoors with a croissant and coffee, observing city life.
